- Initailly I saved enough money to sport my old hobby, Information Systems. I had spent quite a bit of time figuring out the basic client server network based upon what knowlege I was able to gather from the arpa net "internet". I learned quickly that there were servers responisble for delivering the real-time content published by every day people from around the world. I had to have one of my own because there were many rules which governed the use of private networks and servers; that I didn't like at all. I liked doing what ever I wanted to do. I learned two new programming languages, perl and C rather than the VisualBasic programming language used to engineer many of the windows programs used by the majority of new internet users. Perl and C have been around for quite a bit longer than VisualBasic and had brought with it a endless matricies of information to research and learn from. Starting with Microsoft i386 software, I moved to other network software like Redhat linux and then finally FreeBSD. Right now I run what they call a DMZ (De-Militarized-Zone) an acronymn for a server that runs a firewall in between a private network and a public network; such as the internet. 192.168.0.1 is a FreeBSD Server, 192.168.0.3 is a Windows 2003 server, 192.168.0.2 is a windows XP workstation, 192.168.0.4 is a HP Jet Direct laser printer, and 192.168.0.5 is a Windows 98 laptop. I have two network cards in the FreeBSD machine, one of which is connected to the internet and the other is connected to the internal network. The DMZ also forwards internet telnet requests directly to the Windows 2003 Server on the internal network and all machines behind the DMZ have access to the internet.
