- Toxoplasmosis is a disease caused by a parasite that is transmitted to man through the cat. Pregnant women and people with immune deficiency are particularly sensitive to toxoplasma gondii, the pathogen causing this disease. Symptoms consist of a fever, lymph gland swelling, muscle aches, an enlarged liver and others. Aids patients can get a more severe form of this disease. In pregnant women spontaneous abortions can be caused. One of the complications is chorioretinitis, which is an eye disease that can cause blindness. Treatment consists of pyrimethamine and with pregnancy of spiramycin.
