By 2006, the original owner had had enough and sold the website. There was a split in the community and a separate website www.TheIndiaTree.com was started. Meantime, the new owner of IndiaMike restarted the website. The new incarnation is much more commercial. Valuing such websites is extremely difficult - estimates run from $45K to $271K with estimated daily revenues of between $45 to $370. It is unknown how the revenues are shared amongst the organisers of the website. The photographs, contributed by countless visitors to India are extremely good though contributors should be aware that they assign all rights to the photographs to the website owner.

The Indiamike.com site was started in August 2001 as an renegade alternative to Lonely Planet's Thorn Tree Message Board. The goal was simple, to have a good clean forum with a repository of information. In it's previous incarnation the site was just a personal page hence the silly name Indiamike. Around that time I decided to create a portal about travel in India for people to share what they have learned and for others to gain from that. Since it's inception the site has gained a large following of thousands of people from around the globe and has one the largest collection of photo of India on the internet.

The magic all comes together from the aid of our members who all share a common interest and the forum leaders who help keep it all together.

Is it bizarre that a personal page has gone this far? Yes it is. I call it 'ludicrous mode' since a tiny little webpage has turned into a site that thousands of people visit a day. Meetups happen around the world with the members of this site and it's not uncommon to run into another member of this site on the road or at least someone who knows about it. For a little site that's run out of my bedroom it's a very odd thing, but odd in a cool sort of way.
