A monk in the monastery of Mount St. Agnes near Zwolle in The Netherlands, looks back on his life and writes a chronicle, which he dedicates to his great, but unattainable love; lady Aleidt. A chronicle that reveals parts of his own life, but even more so of that of the life of his master and great example Thomas a Kempis.

The learning process of the young monk gives insight in to the person, the life and the thought process of 'master Thomas': captivatingly thrilling happenings around the monastery - an escape by boat, a murder in the graveyard, and the burning of a witch - are intertwined with beautiful descriptions of Thomas' spiritual life.

In numerous circumstances, the author allows Thomas to allude to his, later on world-famous 'Imitation', so the reader becomes familiar with the 'first best seller ever' since typography. One also gets an insight into the circumstances in which this literary wisdoms could have been created.

About the Author

Benjamin Louwerse (1947) initially wanted to become a portrait painter, but because of a spiritual experience he exchanged his painting easel for the pulpit. After his theological education, he has worked as a pastor for many years. Nowadays he lectures theology & cultural studies at the University of applied Sciences, 'Windesheim' in Zwolle, The Netherlands.
