This Web site was hand-coded using Extensible Hypertext Markup Language (XHTML, Version 1.0 Transitional), which is just Hypertext Markup Language (HTML) written with the same restrictions as Extensible Markup Language (XML). Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) are used extensively for text formatting and page layout. A Web browser scripting language called JavaScript is used for intrasite navigation, image copyright protection, e-mail address encryption, and status bar messages. Dynamic Hypertext Markup Language (DHTML), not a formal computer language but a combination of Cascading Style Sheets and JavaScript, is used for special effects, such as the rollovers for the main menu on the home page and the tooltips for the photos on the Photo Archives page. Finally, PHP, a server-side scripting language, is used to process the online rare bird documentation form.
