I dol Hands Design is the brainchild of Corey Ehmke, a web developer with over 11 years of online experience. IHD began as a one-person consulting shop in 1993 in Austin, Texas. Too early for the rest of the world to be interested in web design or development, Idol Hands initially provided freelance graphic design and multimedia services to local businesses and non-profit organizations. When the web revolution caught fire, Corey was ready. Having built his first web site in 1993-- long before graphical web browsers were popular-- he actively contributed to the evolution of the medium from a network of hyperlinked text to a wired virtual community to a viable platform for the electronic delivery of content and services worldwide.
By the late 1990s, the Idol Hands client base included home-based businesses, large non-profit organizations, small- and medium-sized corporations, and international tech publishers. Working with such a diverse group of clients helped Corey to develop key communications skills, as he had to be able to effectively translate between business objectives and technology solutions. He also had to hone his project management, estimation, and technical documentation skills. All the while, he gained exposure to backend systems spanning a wide array of technologies and platforms, and experience in making these systems work together.
As his career developed, Corey spent less time pursuing freelance work through Idol Hands and concentrated more on his day job as a technology professional with Houghton Mifflin. Off-hours development over the past few years were spent on a variety of open source projects and volunteer web design projects.
