All About the ATU
The Amalgamated Transit Union (ATU) is a modern organization which represents a whole range of workers. Office workers, cleaners, supervisors, technical equipment operators, skilled trades and, of course, transit workers. All these men and women work together under the ATU banner to improve their workplace and negotiate benefits for themselves and their families.
As an International union with over 100 years of experience, the ATU represents over 175,000 workers in Canada and the United States. With offices in Washington and Toronto, a staff of experts provide assistance to hundreds of locals. A further 18 international vice presidents and 4 representatives work in the field with local unions, keeping abreast of new labour trends. International officers assist in actions such as contract negotiations.
In Ottawa, Local 279 is one of the largest (2,500 members) and oldest (99 years young) in North America. Members work in both public and private companies. Local 279's office is fully staffed with personnel trained and experienced in contract negotiation, employee benefits, labour rights and workplace health and safety regulations. Local 279 retains one of Canada's best legal firms for legal advice.
