Description

Excerpted from the website:

The Hispanic Outreach Taskforce (HOT) originated in 1989 with Mary Romero, who was employed at the Presbyterian Intercommunity Hospital, Inc. in Whittier; as Administrative Director over the USC/PIH Family Practice Residency Program. She assisted in guiding the third year medical residents in completing their community service rotation. Having lived in Whittier for 20 years, Mary was able to identify areas where Latinos were disenfranchised and not enjoying access to health needs and other resources available. Along with four other professional Latinas, including Barbara Llamas, M.A., Gerontology; Linda Ibarra Wong, Social Worker; Teresa Danton, J.D., Attorney at Law; Linda Ynigues, PhD, Psychologist and also Victor Ledesma, Community Activist; they held their first meeting in a small gazebo in Presbyterian Intercommunity Hospital, with the full support of then CEO Dan Adams. HOT held monthly meetings in the hospital auditorium and provided speakers to address important issues of benefit to the community.
