- I’ve just spent the last half an hour copying all my work from my old XP laptop to my new Vista powered VAIO. Office documents, email archives and my development projects; about 40,000 files give or take, around 5GB in all. For some reason best known only to the Windows shell team at Redmond “explorer.exe” has consumed some 380MB of RAM. It doesn’t look like it’s in a hurry to give it back either. Now it is perfectly possible that previous versions of Windows have also exhibited this same behaviour. I’ve never noticed that before, although admittedly I do not copy 40,000 relatively small files on a daily basis.
