Now you know I am not much for proselytizing or politics especially in this blog. There are many excellent and more informed sources for this type of information so I try to avoid it. This morning I heard a disturbing report on the Australian Broadcasting Company’s Science show about Canada’s environmental record. It was from Richard Reynolds, a Toronto based journalist.
Basically he said that Canadians do not care about global warming. Canadians use more energy per person than anyone else on the planet. One of the reasons for our high energy use is, of course our climate but other Northern Countries do far better than we do. We are the eighth largest oil exporter in the world. I heard a CBC report yesterday that a big reason we can’t meet the Kyoto standard is because of our commitment to producing oil by extracting it from the oil sands. This process is so energy intensive that it pours huge amounts of co2 into the atmosphere. It is terribly inefficient and really doesn’t make sense but does make dollars.
The most shocking thing about all this is the idea that Canadians don’t care about trying to come to grips with the coming changes to our earth’s environmental system. According to this report there has been very little reaction to Harper’s Environmental Minister, Rona Ambrose’s statements about Canada reneging on our Kyoto commitments or other actions of the Harper government which might have a detrimental effect on the environment.
