Healing Arts Communications (HAC) was founded by Marion Karpinski, R.N. and professional videographer Mike Karpinski. The inspiration for creating the company came one day in 1995, when a neighbor called to ask Marion if she could help him administer morphine to his wife, who had just returned home from the hospital. Even though he had been taught the procedure, he felt a little unsure. After Marion helped with the injection, the neighbor asked if Marion could help move his wife onto her right side. “She likes to lie on her side,” he said, “but I don’t know how to move her there and how to keep her there,” he said. Two other family members were present, but no one knew how to move or position her.
“I realized that nursing skills I had come to take for granted presented major challenges for family caregivers, “ Marion said. "I went home and said to Mike, I think we can help families by making a video that teaches basic caregiving skills.”
Mike agreed, and Marion began working on a script. A few months later, with community members and professional colleagues serving as cast members, Marion directed and Mike filmed the company’s first Home Care Companion video, HOW TO CARE FOR SOMEONE ON BEDREST. The program was well received, earning a five-star rating from the National Hospice Association. As appreciative organizations all over the country called to ask the couple to make additional videos, “It became obvious to us that there was a big need for caregiver education, “ Mike said. “We decided to do what we could to fill that need.”
