Holographic Cameras

Description

Excerpted from the website:

Unlike conventional cameras that only record two-dimensional images of objects and scenes, holocams use holographic data storage technology to record full holographic images. They do this by bouncing coherent light off of an object and focusing this reflected light to intersect with a reference beam of coherent light within three-dimensional photosensitive media. In holographic data storage, the information to be stored is encoded into a laser signal ray using a spatial light modulator (SLM). The SLM translates binary electronic information into a checkerboard optical configuration of light and dark that can record up to a million bits of information. The beam with encoded data is shone into a see-through optically sensitive material. Inside this material, it intersects with a second ray and the interference configuration imprints a holographic image within the media. When the hologram is later lit by a laser beam like the reference ray used to make it, then the pattern of overlapping peaks and troughs containing the data is recreated and read. Linked page medical applications of holographic technology also is related.
