Description
I am a knifemaker working in Dunedin, New Zealand. Hoiho is the Maori name for the rarest penguin in the world, the yellow eyed penguin. It lives and breeds along the coasts of the Otago Peninsula near Dunedin, where I live and have my workshop in Harwood right on the Otago harbor.
I was born and brought up in the Netherlands where I was trained as a Goldsmith and emigrated to New Zealand in 1979. Then I found a book by David Boye about knife making. This opened up a whole new world: since childhood I have always had a fascination about knives and had made a few, but it never occurred to me that people were making custom knives for a living.
These days I am a full time knifemaker with 30 years experience of jewelry manufacturing and repair, and I give some jewelry classes at Otago Polytechnic.
