- Aloha and welcome to Hilo Bay Paddler. I started canoe paddling in Hilo Bay about 20 or so years ago. We made our own paddles back then and there was never a store specifically available to purchase paddling accessories. We would paddle with these heavy home made paddles for every race. And maybe one or two of us would have a pair of padded paddling shorts. It was at the State races that we would purchase new paddles or find paddling shorts and suits that we could choose from.
