- Angina is a heart condition where the coronary arteries are narrowed and lactic acid builds up in the heart muscle causing chest pains. Tests that may be required are an exercise tolerance test or a thallium stress test. A history of cigarette smoking is important. An angiography may be done to show the abnormality. With unstable angina often an angioplasty or a heart by pass surgery is needed.
