Description

As long back as I can remember, I had the distinct feeling of being "different". My mother tells me how, before I could speak I would calmly look people in the eye and furrow my brow if they were being less than trustworthy. She said people would often comment on my eyes being “wise” and my being an “old soul”. Throughout elementary and high school I spent much time observing and reflecting on the actions of my peers. It would puzzle me why they spent so much time not being true to themselves and why they played so many “head games” such as the daily popularity drama’s. I would often "know" when things were less than healthy in their home lives, or when they were saying one thing but the truth was something different. It was frustrating and tough for me when I saw beyond all of these illusions at such a young age. Although I stuck to myself a lot, peers would come to me for advice or to "just talk". It always seemed that I knew how to make things clearer and it helped them so I didn't mind. I was told that I was just "mature for my age" and that my peers would catch up to me in the college years.

College was a huge eye opener for me because as I ventured out on my own and used my intuition as I always had, I found out just how different I was. My first 18 years I had spent waiting for my peers to “catch up” to me…and when I got to college I discovered it wasn’t a matter of catching up, it was a matter of literally experiencing the world in a different way. What I "just knew" so many times was not as obvious to other people as I thought it should be. After many awkward moments in my early 20's, where I would go places and know things before they happened, or know things about people when I had just met them, I started to come to the realization that it was my peers who were "normal" and I who was the exception to the rule.
