About HaySopCreek.com

HAYSOP CREEK Haysop Creek is one of two creeks in Bibb County Alabama whose Indian name survives and is thought to be Choctaw in origin. Haysop, spelled Haysoppy on John La Tourette's 1844 Map of Alabama may be a corruption of Choctaw hushapa, meaning "black gum tree". The black gum tree may have been called hush apa by the Indians because birds (hushi) liked to eat its berries (apa).
