Description

The farmhouse from which Virginia works is approximately 600 years old and the present stone house replaced an even older wooden building. The Name 'Chwaen Ddu' can be translated as follows:- 'Chwaen' is an obsolete Welsh word meaning, roughly, an occurance or happening. 'Ddu' is Welsh for black and refers, hopefully, to the fact that, when the house was built, they simply took the top off the shale rock and built the house on it. Alternatively it might have something to do with the fact that some people think the site was a Druids' meeting place. What ever the reason for the name it seems fairly certain that there has been some kind of human occupation on the site for very many centuries.

The most persistant is that of the leader of a gang of cut throats and highwaymen. Legend has it that he (or possibly she) murdered his/her servant in the kitchen! Unfortunately, or fortunately according to your point of view, there was a witness and the villain was hung in Caernarfon for the crime. As a result, luckily, the ghost of the murdered man is at rest and does not walk.

That is not to say that there are no other occupants. Both Virginia and her husband have seen a servant girl and they have it on good authority that there are four others as well! There is a Puritan Lay Preacher on the landing, another lady who remains in one of the upstairs rooms, a small black dog in the same room as the servant girl and finally an unidentified person occupying the upstairs pasage!! Virginia is happy to say that they are all friendly.
