My name is John and I walk with crutches and artificial legs due to birth defects. I have always been quite active but lately have felt the need to get more aerobic exercise (OK at age 42, I guess I'm getting a little "soft"). In the fall of 1997, I learned to swim and joined a health club but working out required special planning and scheduling. During this same time, I accidentally discovered the sport of handcycling while looking around the web. While traveling on business I managed to try out a few types and models of handcycles. I also teamed up with the PA Center for Adapted Sports and went riding with them as often as I could. Soon I was addicted but had no ride of my own. By September '98 I had begged my wife enough that she consented and I ordered my Freedom Ryder Superbike. I have put about a few hundred miles on the bike since the it's delivery in October, cruising the rolling hills of eastern Pennsylvania. I have since realized that my physical conditioning certainly isn't ready for competition but I ride a few times each week and have improved my endurance and speed.
