- The American Legion was chartered by Congress in 1919 as a patriotic, mutual-help, war-time veterans organization that is a community centered veteran organization which has a long history of being the combined voice of the veteran. The original GI bill that sent our fathers and grandfather to college after WWII was the product of the American Legion. La Mesa Post 282 turned 80 years old June 23rd, 2003. Our current building was erected in 1947, and for a time part of the building was used as the Courthouse for East County.
