Title

Guruna Nursery

Description

"Guruna" is pronounced with the emphasis on the first syllable, like you would pronounce "southerner". It is an Aranda word described in Ted Strehlow's Songs of Central Australia:

The native term for the life or soul of a tree was guruna or goruna, which was also the term used for the 'soul' of a living human being. Thus Injola and Kneitnama described the fate of the stricken casuarina tree which had once linked the earth and the sky at Akar Intjota in the following words:

"Singing verses from their wariara song, the sire who is the leader of the Tanka men strikes blows at this casuarina tree. At last the great tree falls over: it lies there in the form of a high bank of stones. But the stump of this casuarina tree is still standing there: the soul of this casuarina, which was in the heart of the tree, dwells there, alive to this very day."
