Owing to the extraordinary success of his official solo debut, Get Rich Or Die Tryin' , it was only a matter of time before US rapper 50 Cent launched his own collective, G-Unit. While many new fans assumed it was a freshly assembled outfit, it turns out that G-Unit's history stretched back before 50 Cent's hit debut, with a line-up that included long-time friends Tony Yayo (b. Marvin Bernard) and Lloyd Banks (b. Chris Lloyd). Following his near-fatal shooting in mid-2000, 50 Cent sought to rebuild his career, and one of the first matters of business was setting up G-Unit. In the early years of the twenty-first century, the crew released a series of mixtapes featuring the DJs Whookid and Cutmaster C. After the blockbuster success of Get Rich Or Die Tryin' (which set a record in the USA for most copies sold of a single album in its first week of release), G-Unit was promptly signed to their own record contract as well. Yayo was sentenced to prison during December 2002 after being arrested for an outstanding warrant and was replaced by Young Buck (b. Memphis, Tennessee, USA) for the recording of G-Unit's debut release, 2003's Beg For Mercy . The album featured input by a variety of acclaimed producers, including Dr. Dre , Eminem , Hi-Tek , and 7th EMP. With the music world still in the grips of 50 Cent mania, the album quickly scaled the charts globally upon its November 2003 release. Shortly afterwards, Yayo was welcomed back into the G-Unit ranks, upon his release from prison in January 2004.
