- The Continental Navy was established on October 13, 1775, and lasted through 1783. This first Navy consisted of 50 ships with only twenty active warships at its maximum strength. At the conclusion of the American War for Independence, Congress sold the remaining ships and released all seaman and officers. In 1794 Congress ordered the construction of six frigates and later established the Department of the Navy on April 30, 1798.
