GLOSSARY OF GLASS LAMP SHADES
FITTER GLASS SHADES:
Necked fitter lamp glass is the most popular style used for suspended glass shades. The glass lamp shade has a molded curved lip which is caught buy the thumb screws in the glass holder(fitter). Buy lossening the screws on the holder the glass shade is easily removable and interchangable. This standard of holding the lamp shade allows for the largest variety of choices of glass lamp shades. To determine the fitter size of your glass lamp shade measure the diameter(across the center) of the top of the neck. You could also measure the circumference(around the edge of the neck) and then divide by 3.14(pie). If you do not have a glass shade you could measure your lamp holder in the same fashion but you will find that the lamp holder will measure slightly larger than the size of the glass lamp shade neck. The thumb screws make up the small difference. remember that these screws are called thumb screws and should be tightened by hand and never with a plier.
TORCHIERE GLASS SHADES: The Torchiere lamp glass shades that we carry have a 2-3/4 inch diameter neck that is about 2-1/4 inch long. The 2-3/4 inch neck of the torchiere glass shade fits over a mogul base socket, as seen on most older floor lamps. There are no screws that hold the torchiere glass in place. Always hold the torchiere glass shade with two hands when handling the glass shade. If the holder does have screws, most likely it is an IES lamp glass shade. IES glass shades are commonly used as reflectors for cloth lamp shades on floor and table lamps. The cloth lamp shade frame usually has indentations where the shade sits on the glass shade. IES glass shades are listed under the torchiere lamp glass section and under the fitter size of the glass. STUDENT SHADES: Student shades are replicas of old oil lamp shades. The Student lamp glass shade sits on a ring or tri-pod holder. The size of the student shade is determined by measuring the diameter of the bottom of the glass shade or the holder the lamp glass shade sits on. The lamp glass shade size is usually slightly smaller than the holder. For example: If the lamp glass shade measures 9-3/4 inch and the holder measures 10-1/8 inch, we refer to it as a 10 inch student glass shade.
