The music industry in the Caribbean has been growing by leaps and bounds over the past decade. However, although the region had made several advances in the use of technology for the marketing and sale of its music, there was an area of this section of the industry which remained unexplored and untapped. This all changed on March 17, 2007 with the launch of the legal music downloading site, www.Gotrhythm.com.

Gotrhythm.com is the Caribbean’s first legal music downloading site. With several artists representing all genres, the site makes it easier for music enthusiasts to find and download the Afro-Caribbean and New World music they want, as well as providing an avenue through which artists can market and distribute their music to every corner of the globe.

The idea for the website was first conceptualized by its founders in 2002. It came about when one of them, Glenn White, realized that he didn’t like or listen to half of the tracks on the many, many CDs he owned and was in effect paying for music he didn’t want. This led to him thinking that it would be good if consumers in the Caribbean had the option of paying for only the tracks they wanted from their favorite local artists, instead of buying an entire CD only to listen to one or two tracks. When he approached two of his colleagues, George Thomas and Pernell Farley, they recognized that this idea, when brought to fruition, could prove to be beneficial for Barbadian and Caribbean artists, as it would give them the opportunity to use the wonders of modern technology to share a slice of their culture – through music – with the rest of the world. And from these first ideas and concepts the Got Rhythm company was born, and subsequently www.gotrhythm.com.

The company not only seeks to provide an online music market place, but also an online community that will bring the artist closer to the people. An online community where people can hang out and discuss all things Caribbean-not just the music- in a fun and entertaining atmosphere. So even if a customer doesn’t like say calypso or reggae, they can enjoy music and artists from other genres as well as communicating with others who have like interests.

Gotrhythm.com is expanding at a rapid rate and continues to seek to add as many artists as is possible so as to offer the widest variety and range imaginable. Some of the artists currently featured are: Square One, Toni Norville, MADD, J-CO, Kimberly Inniss, Red Plastic Bag, Cornerstone and Ronnie Morris.

Other Important Information

Gotrhythm.com is owned by the Got Rhythm Company which also has an affiliated studio – De Maestro – and has several artists- such as Stephanie Chase, Ronnie Morris and Teresa Nichols- under management.

Featured Text -- New World and Afro-Carribean music has certainly grown in popularity over the last couple of years. During this same time, music downloading has also become a major source of entertainment in the digital age. GotRhythm.com is the marriage of these two ideas. The first legal downloading site for Carribbean music, GotRhythm.com was launched last March. In addition to being a legal music download site in the vein of the iTunes store, GotRhythm.com presents a burgeoning online community for people to hang out and discuss the Caribbean (not just the music) in various forums as well.
