Jim’s most profound technical inspiration was his Grandfather who, among other things, was an accomplished clockmaker who preached strict attention to technical detail. Under this influence, Jim picked up the trumpet at age 8 and for a decade played in various bands, his hearing becoming calibrated to the sound of live, un-amplified music occurring in real space. To this day massed wind instruments are Jim’s sound evaluation standard.
In concert with these two interests, at around age 12, Jim discovered Rolling Stone magazine. In those golden days of hi-fi there were full-page ads for audio components with full technical specs, ads that also promised beautiful music. Hooked on the music and mystified by the technicalities, Jim joined the Air Force in 1977 as an FM Ground Radio technician, specifically to learn how to unlock the mystery of audio electronics specifications. Stationed in California in 1978, Jim’s spare time was spent working on and listening to products like Fosgate, Ampzilla and Son of Ampzilla, and attending as many live music events as possible. Discharged honorably in 1981, he got his first job in a high end audio salon in December of 1984, one day before his daughter was born.
