Title

Goldman Equipment, Waterproof LA - John Deere Lawn & Garden Dealer - Bush Hog Lawnmowers - Chainsaws

Description

In 1946, after separation from military service, Harry Goldman, Jr. decided there was an opportunity for a farm equipment store in the vicinity of Waterproof, LA. This was prompted by the fact a large number of mules were still in use in the production of cotton. Also, in those days, an implement store could be started with relatively small capital.

A partnership agreement was drawn up between Harry Goldman, Jr. and his cousin, G. C. Goldman, III, establishing Goldman Equipment Company. Two acres of land were purchased from the G. C. Goldman estate on US Highway 65 and construction was started on a 50 x 100 feet steel building. A dealer franchise was signed with Allis Chalmers in January of 1947. Because Allis Chalmers was involved in a lengthy strike with their labor union, very little volume was done the first year. To help stay in business, soybeans, then new to the area, were bought and shipped in sacks to local cotton oil mills. Later, an elevator was built to handle bulk soybeans and other grain crops.

Soybean acreage continued to increase and with it came the opportunity to sell self-propelled combines. Massey Harris, later Massey Ferguson, had the lead in the market for these machines, which prompted our interest in seeking this franchise. At this time, Allis Chalmers did not have in their plans a machine suitable to our needs. In 1950, a contract was assigned with Massey Harris.
