About Me

My name is Chad Lyman Goerzen (CLG). I have been studying photography for eight years, and have been most influenced by Minor White, Ansel Adams, Edward Weston, and the f-64 school of photography. My goal in photography is to show how I see the beauty of the world. For more about me see my Autobiographical Sketch.

Pure Cloud Photography

I have been interested in photographing clouds for several years. The area of pure cloud photography has not been pursued much by landscape photographers (with the notable exception of Alfred Stieglitz, who created several wonderful cloud studies -- his Equivilants). However, I do not believe he has come close to covering all the possibilities clouds offer. Generally, landscape photographers use clouds as parts of larger compositions, not as compositions in themselves. Currently, the only cloud photography readily available is stock photography of clouds, photos by hobbyists (storm chasers), or meteorological photographs. I believe the sky provides an ever-changing supply of material for artistic photography.

Technical Information

I took all these pictures with a 35mm Minolta XG-1. For the B&W photographs I used T-Max 100 and Tri-X 400 film exposed normally (at ASA 100) and developed with D-76 or Microdol-X. For the colour photographs I used Fujicolor 100 and had the pictures developed commercially. Most of my photographs were taken using a 70-300mm Tokina lens, using the full range of zoom. I have noticed a problem with light falloff using this lens, however, and do not recommend it.
