He is a veteran of both World War II and the Korean War. His many business ventures include nightclubs and a dude ranch in Durango Colorado. He has also owned Appaloosa and Quarter Horses, which were champion show horses and winning racehorses; later going strictly into Thoroughbred racing. He has now retired from the horse industry and is currently working on a book about a horse named "RAY STRAW."
In the late 1970s, Dick was approached by the Union Plaza in Las Vegas to take on the task of building up its Gin Rummy Tournaments. As Director, he made rulings and decisions during tournament play and over the next 10 years helped build the tournaments up to more than 400 players on numerous occasions. For the last 10 years, Dick and his wife Susie have conducted their own tournaments in cooperation with the Boyd group at the Stardust in Las Vegas.
Dick is not only regarded for his skill and knowledge of Tournament Gin, but also his skill in playing Gin Rummy. Over time, he has made decisions during tournament play involving millions of dollars. His rule making is called upon even outside of the tournament field as he receives calls at home for rulings and questions about Gin hands & how to play them.
