About Gerten Greenhouses Garden Center and Nursery

Gertens has long been a member of the Twin Cities retail community. Frank Gerten settled on a few acres of property south of St. Paul in the early 1900s and operated a truck farm selling the produce he grew on the land. His primary market was the local southern St. Paul residents. Franks two sons, Bob & Jerry later took over this truck farm, and Gertens gradually began its change into a full-service garden center.

For decades, Gertens existed as a small garden center and truck farm with no more than 12,000 square feet of retail space and three greenhouses. Basing its business on the motto "Buy from the Grower", Gertens developed a reputation as a business that sold quality plants for less with a friendly staff that was knowledgeable about the plants grown at Gertens. In 1989, the third generation of Gertens became primary owners and operators: Bob Gertens two sons, Lewis & Glen, and Bob's Son-in-law, Gino Pitera.

Under the direction of this third generation, Gertens quickly expanded - both its physical size and its customer base. No longer the simple local truck farm and garden center, Gertens now draws customers from all over the Twin Cities as well as more remote locations in southern Minnesota and western Wisconsin.
