In the early fifties Ontario was in the middle of an extremely robust market. The St. Lawrence Seaway was being built, Elliot Lake had just discovered uranium, Ontario Hydro was building numerous plants in the north, Stelco opened the Steep Rock Iron Ore facility, and paper mills were opening throughout the north. The Trans Canada Highway and the Alberta oil fields were also in high gear. The need for temporary housing in all parts of Canada gave the RV and mobile home manufactures a huge boost. Many new companies opened up facilities across the country.
General Coach went through many expansions over the next couple of decades they also went through many different owners. Production went from 1 unit a day to the capabilities of producing 6 or 7 units a day depending on the size of the unit.
General Coach was bought by Thor Industries in 1982 and has not looked back since. Thor Industries is now the largest manufacturer of towable recreational vehicles in North America.
