Title

Welcome to Gathering Darkness. Celebrating over 16 years of publishing in the small press.

Description

The year was 1989, and for Gathering Darkness (called The Nightside in its earlier incarnation) was how it was done. By hand, with a copier and side staples. There were no computers used then, at least none that were affordable to the general public.

There was a time, not so long ago, when small press (a.k.a. underground) publications were made my hand. Cut and paste and copy machines were the tools of the trade. Typing was done with a heavy metal typewriter on copy paper stolen from employers. And logos were drawn by hand, and copied over and over, until they had to be touched up with fine point markers. Copies of magazines were printed with the use of a copier and a long night of single corner-stapling or triple stapling followed. A few of the luckier ones sent their magz out to people who would saddle-staple the magz together.

After my introduction to the Small Press (a.k.a. Underground) I took a close look at the format that everyone was using, and was unmoved by most of the fiction I was reading. The majority of the fiction was gore and sex just for the sake of it. No substance, no storyline, nothing interesting. Previously I had published a collection of my own poetry and fiction (long out of print) called “Vision and Dreams: and other Nightmares”. with the use of an old Royal typewriter, that I dug out of a dumpster, and a copy machine. I knew that I could create my own magazine using the same process.
