There seems to be some questions and confusion about Gateway Civil Liberties Alliance. Most of this is speculation and disinformation brought about by people who do not now, and never have had any connection to G.C.L.A.
In late 2002 there was no longer anyone setting up an informational table for gun owners in the St. Louis area at gun shows. A member of Missourians for Personal Safety, the statewide umbrella organization for grass roots pro gun activists, was single handedly performing this task in parts of the state where there was no local organization to do it. He offered to provide any materials he could to volunteers willing to fill the void in the St. Louis area. While coordinating with Terry Morris, to schedule volunteers for the MPS table at a gun show, Terry said "We need to form a local group to do this type of stuff", and I answered "OK".
We agreed that we wanted a member based, member oriented, and member controlled organization. When we compiled a list of people to ask to form this new group, we specifically excluded anyone who had served in a leadership capacity in any other similar organization in the past five years, to insure that it would be a completely new organization not encumbered by connection to any other group in the St. Louis area. We did not want to import any problems from outside. Many former leaders from other organizations have since joined G.C.L.A., and have become valuable members. Any implication that G.C.L.A. was formed as a rebel faction of any other group is false. I know. I was there.
