Description

This Web site was developed by the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association (AOPA) to help decision makers and the general public better understand General Aviation's (GA's) critical role in our national economy and the essential role it plays in the daily lives of all Americans.

The concept for General Aviation (GA) Serving America was prompted by the horrific acts of September 11, 2001, which threatened to destroy all that GA has accomplished in America since 1903. That's because, unfortunately, the critical functions served by America's small aircraft and pilots largely have gone unseen. The fear generated on 9/11 led to rapid and often under-informed decisions because few people in decision making roles knew what questions to ask or whom to ask. More often than not, the answers they got were either wrong or only partially correct.

General Aviation is important to the fabric of American life. Without it, the quality of life in America would be vastly reduced. Crop yields from our farms would drop by 50 percent without the aerial control of insects and diseases. The grounding of GA aircraft would cripple overnight shipment of packages. Businesses and industries that depend on fast, flexible travel would lose their critical competitive edge in world markets. Lives would be lost without emergency medical evacuation flights. And 166 million people a year would have no practical way to reach their travel destinations. So it's important that decision makers and the public understand what GA is, how it works, and what it does for all Americans. That's why thousands of AOPA members donated the funds needed to develop and promote this Web site.
