ABOUT OUR SEEDS
Ecologically grown seed: Nearly all of our seed is grown in the following manner: For maintaining soil fertility we use natural rock powders such as greensand and rock phosphate supplemented by composted manure, well-rotted sawdust, composted leaves, and composted crop residues. We rely on time-honored methods of crop rotation, use of disease-resistant varieties, and healthy soil to grow high quality plants and seed crops. In addition we rely heavily on farmscaping methods to help prevent and control pests and diseases. We also occassionaly release beneficial insects to supplement our farmscaping methods. We use no chemical insecticides, pesticides, or synthetic fertilizers.
Organically grown seed: As required by law, we label seeds as "organically grown" only for those seeds that have been grown under organic certification. Beginning in 2002 we began offering certified organic seed of a few varieties with plans to gradually expand our offerings. The certified organic seeds that we offer have been grown for us by certified organic growers. Scroll down to the end of this page to see a sample list of certified organic varieties that we offer.
Genetic preservation: Although much of our seed has been grown ecologically since we started in the seed business in 1983, we have chosen not to become certified organic because part of our mission is genetic preservation of rare or endangered varieties. In a few instances we have had to use a non-organic option in order to rescue a variety. This option has been used rarely, and has been applied only to a few plants in order to preserve the variety or species. The variety is then added to our seed bank, and the remaining seed is grown for seed increase under ecological conditions as described above.
