Title

Garvan Woodland Gardens - The University of Arkansas' Botanical Garden

Description

From 9:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., the Gardens will offer a series of morning camps that will introduce children to a variety of fun, garden-related activities that focus on birds, bugs, and butterflies. The first camp, How Tweet It Is, will take youth on an adventure along the Gardens’ newly improved Birdsong Trail, where they will glimpse a variety of feathered friends in the Gardens’ bird sanctuary. Over 70 species of birds have been documented in the woodland setting, including cardinals, titmice, wrens, owls, eagles, and many species of woodpeckers. Afterwards, the children will build their own gourd birdhouse to take home. Campers will meet in the Pratt Welcome Center. Cost to attend each camp is $10 and includes a light snack. Camp space is limited; therefore, reservations and pre-payment are required. Reserve your space on-line or call 501-262-9300.

"Summer Interest" - 9 to 11:30 a.m., "Ornamental Grasses with Gene Lichliter" - 1 to 3 p.m. Location: Magnolia Room. Open to the public. Regular Garden admission applies.

Verna Cook Garvan, a long-time resident of southern Arkansas, was founder and benefactress of Garvan Woodland Gardens. The daughter of Arthur B and Louise Cook, she lived in Malvern (considered by many as the brick-making capitol of the world) as a child and later in South Carolina and Florida. She returned to Arkansas and married Francis Patrick Garvan, Jr., son of a prominent and affluent family from New York City.
