To invent stories about a world other than this one has no meaning at all, unless an instinct of slander, belittling, and suspicion against life is strong in us: in that case, we avenge ourselves against life with a phantasmagoria of another, a better life.
We take this citation from Nietzsche as something of a manifesto: speculative fiction ought to have a point, to make a comment on the imperfect world we live in, to involve an element of satire—which certainly does not necessarily mean comedy—anger, or revenge. We don't insist on utopia, as the quote may suggest, but we like a bit of relevance one way or another.
