Description
The Fulton Company was established in Milwaukee, WI in 1911. The Company initially began as a sales organization for automobile accessories. In 1913, Fulton began to manufacture its own parts and accessories which it sold to the automotive aftermarket. The company continued to manufacture automotive accessories until the early 1950's.
During World War II, Fulton developed the stamped steel trailer coupler. The coupler was developed in response to a war-related shortage of malleable cast iron, as well as a requirement of trailer manufacturers to be able to weld the coupler directly to the trailer tongue. As the trailer manufacturing industry developed, the innovation of the stamped steel coupler created a unique market for Fulton which became the exclusive supplier of couplers from the 1950's through the early 1960's.
In the early 1950's, Fulton developed and manufactured stamped steel winches for boat trailers. By the end of the 1950's, Fulton had transformed from being an automotive accessory manufacturer to that of a trailer accessory manufacturer.
