FRIEZE HISTORY -- With the motorcycle industry booming in the 1960's, Russell Frieze seized the opportunity to open his first Harley-Davidson dealership. From 1963 to 1977, Russ operated out of two different locations. The first was at 707 Missouri Avenue and the second was on the corner of Sixth Street and Martin Luther King, both in East St. Louis, Illinois. In 1978, the Frieze's moved into their third (and present) location, operating at 517 South Illinois Street, Belleville, Illinois. Frieze Harley-Davidson was the first dealership in the St. Louis Metro Area to remodel under the Harley-Davidson Motor Company Designer Store Program. The first time was in 1988, and then again in 1998. The 1998 remodel included a store expansion. The dealership currently encompasses 20,000 square feet. This addition helped enhance customer service with an expanded inventory line. The additional apparel, home accents and custom motorcycle accessories allow us to better meet your Harley-Davidson needs. In 2002, we opened a second store located at 1607 Highway 50 in O'Fallon, Illinois. Since 1986, this dealership has won 7 Harley-Davidson Motor Company Bar and Shield Awards. Of these, 4 are gold and 3 are bronze. These awards are based on overall dealership performance. Additionally, Frieze Harley-Davidson is currently ranked 23rd out of 650 Harley-Davidson dealers in the United States. Russ started this business because he thought it was a fun thing to do. Russ loved motorcycles. He raced motorcycles for approximately 10 years around the St. Louis Metropolitan area as well as Michigan, Florida, Indiana and Kentucky. Russ had always been loyal to Harley-Davidson, even when the slow period came and some dealers began to sell Japanese products. The only motorcycles Russ ever sold were Harley-Davidson. All he ever serviced was Harley-Davidson. The only motorcycle Russ ever raced was Harley-Davidson. It was in his blood.
When you're a Harley-Davidson dealer in this era, you get to know your customers and their kids as part of the family. He wanted his customers to feel welcome here. Russ wanted them to come in on evenings or Saturday mornings, just to visit and drink coffee and to share stories of recent rides and adventures. Harley riders are a close bunch of people -- always have been.
