Description
Founded in 1663 by Admiral William Hilton. Hilton Head Island is the largest barrier island on the East coast measuring 12 x 5 miles long with over 10 miles of vast beachfront. The beach at Hilton Head has been described as the “finest of the Carolinas.” The marsh West of Hilton Head has an intricate number of creeks and estuaries teeming with wildlife. Hilton Head is very fortunate to have a healthy ecosystem; part of this can be attributable to the strong 8ft. tidal range we experience. In layperson terms, plenty of fresh, healthy saltwater flows through our creeks, oyster beds and estuaries that serve as continuous filters cleaning our water.
The Island offers many other activities for the outdoor enthusiast including playing golf on the finest greens located in World Famous Palmetto Dunes nearby Shelter Cover Marina. Whether novice or tour pro, golfers of all levels can be challenged on the Palmetto Dunes courses: Robert Trent Jones, George Fazio and Arthur Hills. Although I personally feel that fishing and golf go hand in hand, there is also tennis, shopping and wide variety of restaurants that will surely complement your day on the water.
