History

Woolworth purchased the Kinney Shoe Corporation in 1963 and operated the company as a subsidiary. Eventually Kinney diversified itself into specialty shoe stores. Some of the most remarkable ones of this venture were Stylco started in 1967, Susie Casuals started in 1968, and Foot Locker began in 1974. In 1989, the F.W. Woolworth Company established a separate company under the name Woolworth Corporation in New York State, which was responsible for the company’s operations of the Foot Locker stores among the other specialty chains operated by Woolworth's. During 1980s and 1990s, the department store chain of the Woolworth Company declined and eventually the last store of the chain was closed down in 1997. In 1998, Woolworth Corporation changed its name into Venator Group, Inc and remained the parent company of Foot Locker. Due to its poor performance, Venator announced the closure of the remaining Kinney Shoe and Footquarters stores in 1998. However, because of its tremendous success and the market value of the brand name Foot Locker, Venator changed its name to Foot Locker, Inc. In 2004, Foot Locker acquired the Footaction USA and over 350 stores from Footstar.
