Description

Flathats.com was founded by a member of the Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity in the Spring of 2005. What started out as just one blog has now grown into a vast blogging site exclusively for over 5000 different College Fraternities and ororities. Flathats is now owned and operated by Seven 3, LLC. Flathats: The story behind the name.

On November 11, 1750, six students at the College of William and Mary met for a few beers in a small Virginia tavern and bonded together into a secret club that would eventually lead to the current-Greek letter system. They called themselvesThe Flat Hat Club, or referred to simply as F.H.C. It is believed that F.H.C. was the precursor of Phi Beta Kappa, established in 1775 and thus has the distinction of being the first in line of the thousands of Greek letter fraternities and sororities found on college campuses today.

The F.H.C. had such notable members as St. George Tucker, George Wythe, and Thomas Jefferson . In a correspondence of his at one time, Mr. Jefferson said that F.H.C. was not for any useful purpose. It may be assumed from this that the society may have been purely social, but a list of the books in the possession of the club includes heavyweights by such authors as Locke, Newton, Priestly, Franklin, Halley, Hume and Walpole.
