First Baptist Church was organized in 1835 with a total of nine members. The first minister, Rev. Simon G. Miner, began serving as pastor in 1838. Since then, the church has had thirty-two full-time pastors and eleven directors of Christian education and has grown to a total membership of about 400 with about 300 resident members. The sanctuary building, dedicated in 1872, is an elegant tribute to 19th century architecture and craftsmanship.
