First Bank Richmond, N.A., began business on Oct. 12, 1887, as the Richmond Loan & Saving Association. The first meetings were conducted at various businesses in downtown Richmond until June 1896, when the association purchased property and located to North Ninth Street, where it remains today. The association was re-incorporated under the Federal Charter in 1935 and became First Federal Savings & Loan Association of Richmond. First Federal opened a branch in Cambridge City in 1958 and a branch in Centerville in 1959. The bank continued to grow in financial and physical size. This growth includes four new branches within 10 years, including the Eastside branch opening in 1991, the Shelbyville Kroger branch and the Motor Branch on South A Street opening in 1999 and the Richmond Kroger branch opening in 2000. In 1993, First Federal changed its name to First Bank Richmond and became a state chartered savings bank to enable commercial lending services. First Bank set precedence in 1998 when it became the first-ever National Mutual Bank. Growth was not only recognizable in asset size and physical space, but also in services and employees. What started as a handful of employees in the late 1800s, grew to 50 employees in 1992 and more than 150 employees today. This growth resulted in the need for physical expansion. This expansion, which included purchasing and refurbishing the former GTE building on North Ninth Street in Richmond, renovating the bank’s main office on North Ninth Street, and building a skywalk over North Ninth Street to connect the Banking and Financial centers, was completed in downtown Richmond in late 2002. First Bank continues to show growth with a great demand for community banking. The bank’s continued physical growth enhances our community bank and allow us to better serve Wayne County with expanded services.
