Exclusive Books is the country's leading book retailer, with 39 stores in major shopping centres and at major South African airports. Its flagship store in Hyde Park, Johannesburg stocks up to 70 000 titles. In keeping with the group's strategy of expanding into Africa, Exclusive Books has recently opened its first store in Botswana.

In 1951, Philip and Pamela Joseph founded the very first Exclusive Books in a tiny second-hand bookshop in King George Street, Johannesburg. Marketed by word-of-mouth, it developed the reputation of knowing customers personally and anticipating their reading needs. In 1973 Exclusive Books moved to Pretoria Street, Hillbrow, and the shop became Exclusive's first flagship store. The shop soon became "the" place to see and be seen. One of the first shops to open for trading at night, over weekends and public holidays, Exclusive Books changed the face of bookselling in South Africa. The public knew that they could browse happily in a relaxing, elegant environment that would become characteristic of Exclusive Books shops.

The Hillbrow shop closed its doors for the last time in 1993. The end of an era indeed, but the beginning of a fresh, dynamic one for the Exclusive Books Group. The Hyde Park store became the group's flagship and was the largest of its kind in Southern Africa - a status it still enjoys today.
