Evergreen Academy is committed to creating an educational environment that affirms a wide variety of learning styles, experiences, skill levels and interests while maintaining the highest academic standards and challenging students to perform at the peak of their potential. Classroom size varies between ten and eighteen for elementary; ten and twenty children for preschool. Teachers customize curriculum to meet the needs of these diverse groups. Small class sizes make this kind of individualization possible, and with the support of specialists and assistants on staff, teachers are successful at addressing the many different levels that coexist within a classroom.
Our philosophy of teaching stems from a humanistic perspective. We believe in student-centered teaching. As educators, we must consider the diverse needs, interests, and learning styles of out students. We focus on the importance of feelings, open communication and the value of every child. From this ideology, the goal of our classroom becomes an effort to meet the needs of the whole child, including their physical, social, emotional cognitive, and creative selves. Therefore, the prevailing attitude in our classroom should be one of caring and respect, while we constantly strive to enhance each other’s self-esteem and character.
Further, we have found that children are motivated to learn by an innate desire to make sense of their world. Therefore, we strive to enrich our curriculum with hands-on, meaningful activities that create an intellectually engaging, responsive environment to promote each child’s learning and development.
