In March 1998, Trade Centre Limited gained approval and funding from the Nova Scotia Department of Economic Development & Tourism under the Strategic Initiatives Program to establish an Events Halifax (Eh!) office. This office would be dedicated to the identification and pursuit of major cultural and sporting events, both national and international, which could be attracted to Halifax. The project was launched with the hiring of Frank Garner as Executive Director in August 1998.
The agreement also stipulated that Eh! would establish an Advisory Board which would have representatives from all three levels of government, Trade Centre Limited and a selection from the private sector. The private sector members were to be drawn from the corporate, sport and cultural event communities.
In August and September 1998, staff members were hired and a strategic planning process was begun. From this process an initial 3-year plan was developed to guide Eh! A 10-year plan for the city and Eh! has since been developed.
