Most of the Ethiopian Opal is mined in the Shewa Province, which is about 150 miles from the capital city of Ethiopia, Addis Ababa. The 1st report on the Ethiopian Opal appeared in the February 1994 ICA GAZETTE (BAROT, 1994). In early 2008 a new source of desert opal was discovered in the State of Wolo, which lies about 450 miles from the capital city of Ethiopia, Addis Ababa. The Opal from Wolo is distint from the Opal from the Shewa Provience.
