Description

Excerpted from the website description:

Luis Genaro Garcia, first born to Immigrant parents, reflects his experiences, encounters, and his views on the transculturation of the always diversified Los Angeles through the use of skulls. Although Luis Genaro’s focus is to reflect his views and beliefs of his experiences through the use of skulls, one can automatically connect his work to the popular culture of “Dia de los muertos” . As a first generation Mexican -American living in a city like Los Angeles Luis-Genaro recalls experiencing the challenges that come with being a minority, and the eldest in a single parent household in Los Angeles; staying in school, harassment by both police and gangs, forms of social injustice and inequalities. At a certain stage of his life Luis-Genaro was inspired by graffity art. His work is a combination of both backgrounds; a child raised in Mexico, and a teenager raised in South Los Angeles. It was through both these life experiences that Luis-Genaro developed his own style of art. Today Luis-Genaro, an Art Teacher at his Alma Mater, Thomas Jefferson High school, and a Graduate student at USC's Public Art Studies program, focuses his time to educating and giving back to his community through the arts. Luis-Genaro has exhibited throughout Southern California Counties from San Diego to Ventura. He has been part of numerous day of The Dead festivals and was the 2006 Al Borde Dia de Los Muertos, Best in Show winner. Luis- Genaro's ultimate goal is to establish an Art-school in the Jefferson Highschool community, which will give students the opportunity to pursue a future in the Arts. “My main concern is to share the talent that god has blessed me with, to my students, the public, and the community that made me who I am today”. Luis Genaro Garcia
