An escutcheon is essentially the technical term for a keyhole cover. Instead of just leaving a bare hole in the door, an escutcheon is used to decorate the keyhole, and also for protection. For example, if an escutcheon wasn’t used, the keyhole might degrade and debris might get into it, meaning that it becomes less effective and ultimately ruining it. An escutcheon protects the outer parts of the keyhole to ensure it doesn’t just break apart over time.
